Wendy Nur Jamila was a long-time member of the San Diego DUP circle. She often showed up early and helped with set up and with practicing for the dances. She would add her lovely voice to the mix and soon we would all be soaring. She radiated positivity. It was always so much fun to see her huge smile in the circle!
When we went on zoom ,because of covid in 2020 Wendy would show up in her zoom box and radiate her smile to us all. As a leader new to zoom I would look at the group to see how the dance I was leading was landing and there would be Wendy beaming away. When I would see her I felt my body relax and I knew all was well.
Ya Salaam dear one
We love you we bless you and we hold you in our hearts.
Sad to hear of Wendy Nur Jamila’s transition. She was a shining light in the circle, with an underlying strength and clarity of spirit that she shared with an open heart. I feel blessed to have known her. May she soar now.
I met Nur Jamila Wendy Wilde through the San Diego Dances of Universal Peace. She brought to the circle her clear, beautiful voice and smile that filled the whole room!
When COVID shut the world down in 2020 and the dances forced to move to Zoom, Nur Jamila Wendy faithfully showed up in a Zoom rectangle. I had since moved to Walla Walla, WA, and I too could continue to participate in the SD Dances via Zoom. And I returned the favor by offering to Nur Jamila Wendy (and other SD Dancers) the Walla Walla Dances on Zoom.
Nur Jamila was always eager to join the dances – wherever and whenever she was able.
COVID also shut down another decades-old Encinitas/Escondido area tradition which Nur Jamila participated in – a monthly in-person Devotional Singing gathering. Soon a daily “temporary” Devotional Singing-like home formed on Zoom. Christened “Mid-Day Mantra”, it was Zoomed daily at noon, led by three songleaders who offered 30-45 minutes of devotional style songs.
Although initially not a songleader at Mid-Day Mantra, with encouragement, Nur Jamila reluctantly stepped into that role when COVID abated and other songleaders returned to work. She, and one or two others, kept Mid-Day Mantra alive until they could encourage and recruit others (like me!) to offer songs and readings.
After more than three years now, I am amazed that Mid-Day Mantra continues on Monday through Saturday at noon!
It was also during the COVID times on Zoom that she took to heart her Sufi name – Nur Jamila Wendy, which she would later change to Noor Jameela Wendy to assist those who had difficulty pronouncing her name! 🙂
She continued to faithfully offer songs at Mid-Day Mantra, accompanying herself on guitar, until the pain of sitting became too much in her last year. Even after she was unable to perform, we were always delighted when we saw her profile picture and name show up in the Zoom room. We kept her name in our daily circle of healing prayers.
I have many fond memories of the love and beauty Nur Jamila brought to the Dances, and the songs she sang at Mid-Day Mantra with so much love.
