Jemaluddin Oberman, was an amazing human being. I met him only once, and had the privilege of working with him throughout a five day conference on Sufism at Black Mountain Conference Center In North Carolina. I was leading dances at the conference and my regular guitarist from North Carolina was unable to attend. I asked around, and was directed to Jemaluddin as a possible accompanist.
For me, meeting him was love at first sight. He was such an incredibly gentle soul, and it was obvious that he had a great depth of heart and character. In getting to know him, I was deeply impressed by his integrity, and by the decisions that he had made over the course of his life, decisions which were carefully thought out, and which were motivated by the highest good. He was very self-effacing, yet extremely accomplished, and his quality of heart was superb.
Jemaluddin touched me deeply and as I followed his course of health deterioration, I grieved his suffering and ultimately the loss of his presence on Earth. I believe that he was called to serve humanity in another and even greater capacity than he had fulfilled while here amongst us.

Jemaluddin (Mark) was a great gift to us in Va. I danced and sang with him uncounted times over the years. We often ended the Kalama at the same wondrous note staring into the beauty of the group and the spirit.
At Joshua Tree, he taught and watched us grow.
At camps his guitar and voice were like stars in the night.
One night we sang with our teacher “My heart is Rainin’ Stars, and time stopped for a while.
As he weakened, we talked at times, or emailed, and felt the pain that comes to those of us who know from Medicine that we are so very mortal.
I had the deep honor of singing with and for him at his ceremony in the woods as we buried him- his favorite song -My Life Goes on in Endless Song.
To him goes much love and blessing, as he was a blessing to us. May we all remember and emulate his love and compassion, and go on in endless song…
