Maureen Pomeroy, 58, of Boonville, MO, passed away on Friday, December 11, 2020 at her home. She was one of five children. At age 16, she lost both of her twin brothers in a tragic accident. After graduation from college, Maureen went to work in the airline industry as a programmer. Forced to take an early retirement, she lived frugally on her retirement savings. In the last years of her life, she enjoyed a holy relationship with Hamza Richard Roessler. She passed with Hamza at her side.
A beloved friend, Maureen Jamila loved to record and follow TV shows that challenged her very sharp intellect. She also loved history shows and documentaries.
I prize the many moments we spent in singing, praying, and just chatting together. I was her closet Sufi neighbor, so we hung out often. Bless you on your way, dear friend.
Some of the memories of Jamila that stand out for me are related to her passionate enthusiasm. I especially remember how she loved to do the rather complex dance that accompanied the Starlight Zikr, which she continued to do as long as possible even as her balance became more tenuous, holding tight to the hands of her dancing sisters as she navigated the twists and turns of the graceful and energetic dance! She also totally poured her heart and beautiful voice into singing her favorite zikrs, perhaps especially the Kaluma counterpoint part. Her passionate enthusiasm was also shown in standing up for her long-time partner Hamza, speaking his praise with deep sincerity and appreciation. Similarly, she showed a great love for our dance leader and teacher Hakima Greentree, listening to her every word with rapt attention, and following with close to adoration her friendship, mentorship and musical/ dance teachings.
