Cassim – My beloved friend and mentor…
I’ve been thinking about some of the great times we had together, when we both lived in San Francisco, in the mid to late 1970’s
Living in your unique triangular house on Bocana Street two different times: the first time with Alexi soon after we first arrived in San Francisco, and the second time when I was escaping from The Khankah and I needed a friendly place to land, somehow there was space in your apartment downstairs, you took me in – thanks Cassim.
Learning to set ceramic tile from you. Working with you and Nirtan – what a crew! Our “company” name: “C O T L” company – Cash On The Line.
How many times did we listen to the first album of Crosby, Stills and Nash?
Late starts to our work day, which took some getting used to. Driving to the jobs in the “Tile Mobile”, your old Ford station wagon. Taking the “scenic route” to and from jobs. Smoking a joint before, or during, or after work…or even sometimes all three.
The many and varied tile jobs we did, some of them in unusual and wonderful places, like inside the old Hamms brewery…or the mansion on Belvidere Island…or the house on Telegraph Hill, with a great view of the Bay.
Weekend trips to Big Sur to stay at Andy’s cabin. Lots of laughter. Making music in the cabin…and making music on the beach with horns we made out of dried bull kelp.
We traveled together with a group from the Bay Area to Lama, my first trip there, as part of a work crew to finish the Maqbara retreat hut, near Murshid Sam’s grave site. Plastering the inside of the hut …you were a talented artist in so many ways.
I remember the time I had an appointment to see Moineddin in Petaluma, and my car suddenly broke down, just as I was getting ready to leave. I was in a panic…you handed me the keys to your car – without any hesitation.
You were Best Man at my wedding at Lama – and you almost didn’t show up. I had just about given up hope of seeing you, so I had asked Ron Reese to fill in – but in classic Cassim style, you showed up on the day of the wedding, at the very last minute…I’m so glad you did.
One could not ask for a better friend. I am so grateful for our time together.
Ya Salaam dear brother!
