Carlos Varona was a psychologist from Puerto Rico, a brilliant man with a tender and sensitive character, and a supreme Listener, someone who took in all things and all people with compassion and attention. He visited and stayed for a while at Khankah S.A.M. in San Francisco in its earliest days, and went on Joe Miller’s walks, and to Dance meetings. He was the father of Karima Varona, who was also part of the khankah and a dancer in Gabriel’s Horn company with many other women Sufi initiates before she married Shems Ira Friedlander.
