Beloved friend and teacher on this journey thru Life. Aslan’s smile was contagious and his eyes shining with love. He expressed his joy thru music. He taught us to sing to the divine presence that was always in our soul. I came to know that One Soul he sang about, the spirit of guidance. My favorite remembrance is him singing “Awake my soul to the call, Awake to the Spirit of Guidance”. Recently,
he reminded me I was his first mureed, initiated on Mt Shasta in 1989. He made me wait for years for that first initiation. I attended the healing service in his home regularly and was surprised when at the Mt Shasta camp, my dream came true. When leaving Mt Shasta, I saw clouds form into a heart shape. I cried a few tears as my heart was full of joy. When I left California, he initiated me as a healing conductor so that I may continue the healing work. I have held my brother in Light and will continue to walk with him in remembrance thru the breath. On angels wings I am sure you were lifted up to join the
Beloved. Till we meet again, I send my love.
Aslan and I shared a cabin at Wilderness Camp in 2017, at the shores of Flathead Lake, in Montana. We made a deep connection as one does when you share the same living areas in a small space.
Every morning, he would sit in the living room at the small table against the wall with his song files. It was a small metal file box, like a recipe box, full of 3 x 5 index cards with songs and dances. He looked like he was planning recipes to cook the circle of songs of nourishment of the heart for the day. Amazing man. I learned a lot from him in that week of camp.
He loved a new song and dance I created, If You Want to See God. One morning, we sat together while I recorded it into our phones. He said he would take it to the world. I don’t know if he did, but here I want to share the voice recording of that beautiful song and morning with Aslan, where we both cried at the essence of seeing God in each other.
He will always live in my heart through his way of presenting and teaching, almost looking and feeling like a Santa, with jolly sincerity and depth, and safety to the core.
I will deeply miss our dear Sufi brother. Among numerous contributions to the Sufi Message, Aslan was an indispensable help in working with Murshid Hidayat and myself to make the Singing Wazifas a reality.
He was often at Summer School in Holland inspiring everyone with his gentle instruction while leading the Wazifas, Sufi Choir and Dances.
His journey continues in the unseen and his presence remains with all those that had the pleasure of his kind and wise company.
I first heard Scott and Kathy’s names while I was working as attending and emergency room doctor at a tiny hospital located on the Hupa reservation, by the Trinity River in a beautiful, untamed part of far-northern California. Many of the patients I saw during my tours of duty up there, during the 90’s, told me of the wonderful Dr. Scott and his wife; but I had no idea until later that they too were Sufi devotees and leaders, connected with the nearby community in Humboldt county. And when we did meet, at Mendo camp as I recall, I loved him immediately!
Working as a fellow Camp Doctor with Aslan, I saw him as a fine example of the original meaning of “doctor”, that is a teacher and healer — very knowledgeable and compassionate, able to communicate ever so clearly and positively with patients. We had much in common, as well, as healing conductors, choral singers and travelers. I did not spend much time with him, but his memory just warms my heart!
