I only caught glimpses of him over the years on my sojourns to California for Mevlevi events… my clearest memory of him is his power and a sense that there was just no nonsense about him. I treasure that.
Teacher of my teacher, grandfather of my heart and soul, lover of Allah …
I was told to meet him by Khaliq, my teacher and his mureed when I went to graduate school. I learned quickly what seemed to be gruffness masked a heart, “two sizes too large.” He was direct and honest, but would smile and a flood of love would pour outward.
He once went to meet Matthew Fox. He brought his flute and played for him. It was a short meeting, but when I met Matt and mentioned I knew Ahmaddin, he smiled and told of the stranger who sat in his office just to play his flute. He sent his regards and love and I passed those along the best I could.
Ahmaddin trained me as I engaged in graduate work to become a Cheraga. He ordained me after I received my degree saying, “Allah makes one a Cheraga, ordination is our way of recognizing it.”
When I lived in Khankah SAM, I was honored to have Ahmaddin’s guidance and friendship. Even though my life path took me far away, I still can sit quietly, think of him, and the waves of love pour over me again.
His light, his teaching, his love still shine as he was a channel clear and open to the message and love of the Source of All.
We were friends many years. When in southern California he considered me one of his checkpoints because we could speak on the phone often. He was leading a fledgling center in San Diego and I was in Torrance then. We exchanged letters regularly. We laughed a lot. We discussed the esoteric lessons. When my family and I went to San Diego for a vacation, we visited him there and our son Phil was enchanted by this big bear of a man. We did our best to keep each other shining and listening. We were enriched by our shared commitment to the work.
Toward the One, I concur with what others have said about beloved Ahmaddin.
Ahmaddin led a weekly class to study Inayat Khan’s writings @ the Mentorgarden the Winter of 1991. I was privileged to attend, it was always a highlight of this mureed’s week.
Ya Salaam !
p.s. My understanding is His ashes are to be interred at SWSC near Pir Moineddin C. Jablonski.
