3 Memories for “Shakur Toby Kimmey”

Shukur was a mureed of Wali Ali’s, probably initiated around the early
90’s. He was a regular attendee of the Northwest Sufi Camp and other
Sufi activities in the Pacific Northwest from the late 70’s on. Physically
he suffered from a debilitating disease that confined him to a wheel
chair and took his vision but his wit and joy for music never left him.
He was a consummate punster and story teller. Loved jazz and old
    radio and hugs.

I had my iPOD with lots of old jazz tunes on it. For fun, I sat with Shakur to play “Name That Tune.” Not only could he name each and every tune within 2 to 4 measures, but he could tell me when and where it was recorded, who was playing trombone, trumpet, etc. and also had many stories of having contacted these musicians personally and some of them gracing him with free tickets, records and conversation.
He had been a radio DJ and owned hundreds of records.

Those wheels go on forever at NWS Camp. Who would you rather talk music with. He knew more than some musician friends of mine. Love and laughter and big Hugs
