Dear Aziz Gary was (and is) a shining light. Our family and his met at Sufi camps in the Northwest and knew from the start we were connected. His boys and my daughters were of similar age and we both knew and demonstrated the beauty and reward of deeply and publicly caring for and holding our children.
We found that Aziz and I had grown up in the same fundamentalist evangelical Christian denomination. And we both ran away from it in horror at an early age. We also both married secular Jewish women from the Midwest!
I was honored to sit with Aziz for a couple of extended times during his illness and even in that terrible place, he was always paying attention to my needs.
The night he died, as I was falling asleep, I felt his presence very strongly. He was there before me in all his bright, happy, lovely energy. I’m the morning I heard he had died at that time.
I thank the Divine One that he was in my life and was my friend and his family remains a precious part of my life.

I remember Aziz as a ray of joy, and laughter, and a being full of delight. One of my fondest memories was seeing him floating around a sufi camp on his newly purchased hoverboard. He had the biggest smile on his face gliding through the forest and over the paths.
Shortly after he died, I went on a hike in the Columbia River Gorge. It was a rainy, windy day, with slips of clouds floating through the trees as the trail ascended, I could feel Aziz’s spirit gliding through the tree. In that moment I experienced both the sadness of his death and a moment of great calm knowing he was finally soaring freely through the tree tops!

Dear Aziz Gary radiated joy many ways and times in my presence. We met at some NW camps, and shared the Nature’s Way sangha. Some fondest memories are of his gifted and spectacular photos of nature, especially taken in Montana, or at Sufi camps on Lake Coeur’d Alene (while hiking and/or driving his Tesla which was my first EV experience.) Aziz, and Aliya Florence hosted me in their gracious Bozeman home several times, on my journeys home to eastern Montana. Vivid memories of Aziz sitting at table, sharing a meal, his stories, while we enjoyed conversation, and food cooked lovingly by Aliya. They always made me feel welcome, comfortable and well fed. May Aziz’s spirit/ruha soar in light and love. May his beloved family know solace. Ya Salaam Aziz.
When I think of Gary Aziz, I see him standing, grinning, and watching over his family with such delight. He was a walking example of mudita – one who takes joy in the joy of others. Love poured out of him. He wasn’t one to call attention to himself and was happy to serve. His way of moving through the world was and is an inspiration to me. Ya Shakur!
